Bookish Halloween Costumes

We are in the midst of October and I’m sure all the parties will start soon if they haven’t already! If you don’t have an idea for a costume yet, might I suggest being a book character? There’s a plethora of ideas out there. Here are some fun ideas–with pictures from Pinterest/Google to give you an idea of what it would look like. These pictures are not my own!

  • The Cat in the Hat

Why not be a childhood classic? It would be easy enough to dress as a cat, just add a crazy hat on top and go cause chaos!

  • Ofred

This one might be a little too realistic, looking at the state of the world, but it’s also scary. Dress up as a handmaid from The Handmaid’s Tale. You might even be making a statement.

  • Mary Poppins

Before she was Disney, Mary was a nanny in a book. She was strict but also practically perfect in every way–just like your costume will be!

  • Dorian Gray

Any gothic classic fans out there? For this you’ll need to get a picture of yourself and mar it. Make that picture grotesque! Then, dress yourself up but carry the picture around. Or just be the picture!

  • Katniss Everdeen

This is a costume I once was when the movies were just coming out. I’ve always loved The Hunger Games. Why not be this archery-loving baddie?

  • Percy Jackson

Or Annabeth Chase from Rick Riordan’s series. If you can get your hands on an orange Camp Half-Blood shirt, that’s pretty much all you need.

  • Coraline

Another popular movie that started out with a book, this one written by Neil Gaiman. You can be this precocious girl, but you don’t have to sew buttons in your eyes!

  • Hester Pryne

Another one that might feel too close to home but could send a message. If you’re a fan of The Scarlet Letter, go ahead and sew an A on your chest. Then you’re costume gets an A from me!

  • Jude Duarte

I love The Cruel Prince and hopefully you do too! Jude is a badass and it would be so fun to form your hair into horns and carry with you a (fake!) dagger.

  • The Man in the Yellow Hat

Finally another childhood favorite: Curious George. Dress in all yellow and carry around a stuffed monkey. Or, grab a friend to dress up as George so you can match!

What are you going to be for Halloween? Comment and let me know!
